5 Steps to Speed up Your Mac

The free space on the OS X startup disk is critical to the performance of your Mac. OS X utilises the available space on your boot volume to perform paging. If the startup disk is almost full, you may experience frequent performance hits. To avoid getting into this sort of trouble, you can do plenty of things to free up disk space. Some of them are discussed here in detail:

Clean Out the Trash
The Trash bin may fill up quickly if you are accustomed to move files to this folder on a regular basis. A bulky Trash folder may consume significant amount of drive space, which will eventually cause your Mac to slow down. You can empty your Trash by starting Finder and then choosing 'Finder' > 'Empty Trash'.

Archive Old Files

Undoubtedly, the best way to reclaim disk space is to archive old and infrequently-used files. Archiving can be done by either backing up these files to another disk or copying them to a new place and then deleting the original copies on your disk. A feature to create compressed archives of files and folders is built into Mac OS X 10.3 and later.

Delete Temporary Files and System Logs
You should do this as a part of your routine maintenance. Applications create temporary files periodically in normal use. In addition, system logs keep increasing in size over time. You should clean up these logs and temporary files regularly in order to create free space on your startup disk.

Remove Previous Systems folder from an Earlier 'Archive and Install'

In case you did an 'Archive and Install' installation before, your hard drive must be storing the prior Mac OS X System folder in a new folder named 'Previous Systems'. You should move this folder to the Trash and then empty your Trash.

Get Rid of File Backups Created by iTunes Library
Every time there is an iTunes update, the application itself backs up its current Library file. Once the update is finished and the application is working fine, you do not require this backup. Hence, you should remove this backup by navigating to Home → Music → Previous iTunes Library and moving all the contained files to the Trash. Not to mention you need to empty your Trash bin.
