Mac File Recovery after Volume Corruption

Most users have a hard time nailing down corruption on their Mac hard drives. This is primarily due to the nature of disk corruption in Mac OS X. It might occur subtly causing damage to your data and various applications installed in the system. If this corruption is left unchecked, it would spread over your entire drive paving way for data loss and other similar problems. The potential causes of hard drive corruption in Mac include hardware failures, system crashes, third-party software application conflicts, power outages, faulty drivers, and bad sectors on the disk. In such circumstances, it is worthwhile to use a clean, updated backup to restore all the lost or inaccessible drive data. If you do not have a good drive backup, you should go for Mac recovery using advanced third-party software.

Let us consider a practical scenario. Suppose you use Mac OS X based computer. When you try to back up your Mac drive with a backup utility, the process completes with an error. When you run Disk Utility, you receive some more errors as shown below:

'invalid directory item count (should be 31 instead of 29)'
'Volume was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired'

Disk Utility also indicates that you need to repair disk by starting from the Mac installation disc. The above errors occur possibly due to corruption on your hard disk. You may attempt to repair this corruption using Disk Utility by starting up with an external boot media as follows:

  • Boot your Mac using the Mac OS X Install disc.
  • When the system has started, go the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.
  • Now, select the First Aid tab.
  • To see all your hard disk partitions, click on the triangle to the left of the hard drive icon.
  • Choose your Mac OS X volume and click 'Repair'. Disk Utility will verify your disk and fix corruption.

If the above procedure fails to repair disk corruption, you should resort to commercial third-party Mac file recovery software like Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery. The tool uses safe, proprietary mechanisms to extensively scan your Mac hard disk and recover all the lost or inaccessible data, including files, photos, documents, videos, databases, and emails. The software supports recovery from all types of storage media, such as internal/external hard drives, USB drives, and memory cards. Further, these utilities are compatible with the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and all prior versions.
